The Picture Of Dorian Gray And All Quiet On The Western Front
Kyle Partyka Jill Vaughn English II Honors 14 October, 2014 Social class is something that people use to classify someone and judge someone on. This term or idea is thoroughly introduced within the stories The Picture of Dorian Gray By Oscar Wilde, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn By Mark Twain, and All Quiet on the Western Front By Erich Maria Remarque. Wilde uses his characters to represent his arguments and criticism towards the upper-class people during that time period. As for Twain, he uses his setting to describe the problems within that society and how it felt to be in that area during that place in time. Remarque uses his characterââ¬â¢s thoughts to get what Remarque wants to say about the peopleââ¬â¢s beliefs in his time. Overall, the experiences that these authors went through and saw within their community and society really influenced their words throughout the stories. Dorian Grayââ¬â¢s life throughout the book is revolved around social class/Aristocracy. Dorian Gray comes from a wealthy family but he is not really pa rt of Aristocracy, but this Aristocracy within the society and the people has been an influence on him. Dorian is more of a middle-class men that does not seem to know what to think about everything going on around him. That is why he takes interest into Lord Henryââ¬â¢s words. He thinks that it is someone who is experienced and should take his word. Wilde, in this story, is representing and criticizing the British Monarchy within that time period.
